Devotional Nehemiah 2: Spiritual Vision and Reconstruction

The Biblical message I want to share with you today is about spiritual vision. This message is found in Nehemiah 2.

To provide a bit of context: during the Babylonian captivity of the People of Israel, under the reign of King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah—who at the time was the king’s cupbearer and enjoyed a good life—had no need to put his life at risk. However, on the day of one of their celebrations, the king noticed that Nehemiah was sad, but it was a sadness of the soul. The king asked him what he desired, and Nehemiah replied that he could not refrain from being sad knowing that the land where his ancestors were buried lay in ruins and its gates had been destroyed by fire. Then, he prayed to God and asked the king if he could help his people rebuild Jerusalem. In the end, the king accepted and gave him letters authorizing his safe passage to hand to the governors of the regions he had to cross, as well as an order for Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, to give him timber for their construction needs…

From this chapter in Nehemiah 2, we can draw 3 crucial points about the spiritual vision Nehemiah received:

1. Spiritual vision confirms the calling (Nehemiah 2:11–16): Having this vision was the confirmation he needed to find the courage to put his status and life on the line to help the people of Israel.
2. Spiritual vision encourages others (Nehemiah 2:17–18): When he shared this same vision with the priests and the people, it gave them the motivation to rebuild the city and the temple, knowing it could be even better than before. This was despite the fact that, at the time, nothing objectively indicated that it was possible given the precarious conditions they and the city were in.
3. Spiritual vision faces opposition (Nehemiah 2:19–20): When they committed themselves to starting the work, two guys (whose names escape me right now) did not like the idea at all. They tried to discourage them by insinuating that they were disobeying the king’s orders, and mocked them, saying they would never finish the job. But Nehemiah answered them in faith, stating that it wasn’t by their own power, but God Himself who would guarantee the success of their endeavor—and that their opposers had no share or right in their land.
