Devotional John 19: The Crucifixion of Jesus and the Fulfillment

Today’s devotional was on chapter 19 of the Book of John. And this was the synopsis.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Jesus is sentenced to death by crucifixion, dies humiliated on the cross, is buried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, and all the Scriptures are fulfilled.

Observations

These were my observations.

1. Jesus was handed over and betrayed by His own people. It is very tough to admit and hard to believe at times, because we try to do the best for our own. But frequently, we are stabbed in the back by the people we help and know the most. This happens frequently in today’s world. However, it was already happening since times before Christ and it also happened to Him. What hurts the most is that Pilate, the Roman governor, did not want to sentence Him to death, as he found no crime in Him. But the Jews were so spiritually blind, blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, and I believe were also possessed by Satan, that they decided, even with alternatives given, to sentence Him to crucifixion—the very person who came into the world to save us. Very sad 😭 what He suffered for us. For we all betrayed Him 😭
2. Jesus made sure that all of Scripture was fulfilled while suffering extreme pain. This is one of the most impressive qualities of Jesus. While suffering, He did not stop ensuring that what the Scriptures said came to pass. From the dividing of His garments when He had already been crucified, to being given vinegar to drink, to not having His legs broken, etc. He certified that everything was fulfilled according to the will of God for His Glory and the Glory of God.
3. Jesus really died, He did not faint as some try to claim. There is a predominant narrative among some non-believers and atheists claiming that He did not die—that He merely fainted. But this is not true. And this chapter of the Book of John proves that Jesus really died, because one of the soldiers took a spear to pierce Jesus’ side. And it was verified that blood and water came out separately, because the blood was coagulated. This means that Jesus had stopped breathing air for quite some time. In other words, He was truly dead.
