Devotional Psalm 109: David’s Prayer in Anguish

My devotional today was on the book of Psalms, chapter 109, and this is what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, we find David’s psalm, which is a prayer to God concerning the enemy who persecutes him. David finds himself brokenhearted over the lies and slander spread about him and the attempts on his life.

Observations

These were my observations:

1. David prays for God to judge those who persecute him. And it is noticeable that David is not only deeply distressed but also very angry. To the point of asking God for the wicked person to be condemned and for only misfortune to fall upon him—even for another to take his office. “Appoint a wicked man over him, and let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, and let his prayer become sin. May his days be few, and may another take his office.” (Psalm 109:6–8)
2. David prays to God that the relatives and descendants of the wicked be cursed. It is at this moment that we realize even more how upset and fed up David truly is. Because David was a man who was almost messianic through his beautiful spirit, soul, passion, and devotion to God. So, when we hear him ask for these things in his prayer, we realize how desperate he was with this whole situation. “May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. May his children wander about and beg, seeking bread far from their desolate homes.” (Psalm 109:9–10)
3. David prays to God asking for help and mercy. At the end of his prayer, he asks God to act on his behalf and to have mercy on him. “But you, O God, my Lord, deal with me for your name’s sake; deliver me, because your mercy is good. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.” (Psalm 109:21–22) Furthermore, in the last verses, David asks God to save him not only to deliver him from darkness, but also so that God may be glorified for helping him. For in the disadvantaged situation in which he found himself, only God could save him. Therefore, everyone will know that God is with him and that it was God who saved him. “Help me, LORD my God! Save me according to your mercy. So that they may know that this is your hand; that you, LORD, have done it.” (Psalm 109:26–27)
