Devotional 2 Corinthians 2: Forgiveness and Ministers of the New Covenant

Today’s devotional is found in the book of 2 Corinthians, chapter 2, and this was what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul continues writing his second letter to the church of Corinth, explaining that as Christians we must forgive the repentant sinner and that we are ministers of the new covenant.

Observations

These were my observations.

1. We must forgive the sinner. This is perhaps the greatest challenge for us as Christians. When we hear about Jesus Christ and God, among their most well-known attributes are mercy and compassion. We see this in two passages in particular. In the first, Abraham asks God whether He would destroy the righteous along with the wicked, and God responds that if even a righteous few are found, He will spare the place out of compassion and mercy (Genesis 18:23–32). In the second, Jesus explains to His disciples that we must forgive others not just seven times, but seventy times seven (Matthew 18:21–22). In other words, we must always forgive others. Above all, Jesus did this on the cross for us, forgiving His persecutors even though He was completely innocent (Luke 23:34). Therefore, we have no excuse or alternative. If we consider ourselves Christians and truly accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we must forgive those who sin against us. This is never easy. Often we are victims of deep injustice and malice, making it hard to forgive the offender. Nevertheless, our own forgiveness is tied to our compassion and willingness to forgive others (Matthew 6:14–15). For if our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forgave all who wrongfully condemned Him, we are called to do the same.
2. Christians are ministers of the new covenant. Paul also uses this occasion to remind believers that one of the great commandments Jesus gave us is to preach the gospel to all creation (Mark 16:15). Jesus came to bring good news to all who believe in Him (John 3:16–17). This commandment has always been vital, but it is even more critical in our digital age. With social media and modern communications, it is easier than ever to broadcast a message to every corner of the earth. In the past, spreading a message was far more costly and difficult through print newspapers, television, or radio. Yet today, with all these technological opportunities, the messages that spread most rapidly across digital platforms often belong to darkness—messages that lead people away from the path of God. Christians too often remain silent in the background while those serving worldly agendas dominate the cultural narrative. The hard truth is that we have no excuses. It has never been cheaper, simpler, or more accessible to share the gospel than it is today through blogs, social networks, and creative media. The real obstacles are often laziness, shame, fear, and indifference. All of these can be overcome if we genuinely desire to honor God. Whatever we truly prioritize, we find a way to do—whether going out, shopping, consuming endless entertainment, or posting content that builds no one up. None of those activities stop us, even when they demand far more effort. We must be honest with ourselves and re-evaluate our priorities. At the end of our lives, nothing done for worldly vanity will matter when we stand before God in the final judgment (1 John 2:17). Therefore, let us wake up from spiritual slumber and fulfill our purpose here on earth.
