Devotional 2 Corinthians 9: The Principle of Sowing Generously

Today’s devotional is found in the book of 2 Corinthians, chapter 9, and this was what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul writes in his second letter to the church of Corinth, explaining the spiritual principle of sowing bountifully and encouraging believers to give with a cheerful and willing heart.

Observations

These were my observations.

1. The vital importance of sowing generously and cultivating the gift of cheerful giving. When we hear about giving, we often hesitate for two primary reasons. First, we fear that we will not have enough for our own needs—yet strangely, we always seem to find resources for vacations, parties, entertainment, or the latest tech devices. Second, we often withhold giving because we doubt whether recipients or organizations will manage the funds faithfully. While wisdom is necessary, these doubts frequently serve as convenient rationalizations for our fallen, selfish nature, which naturally prefers to hoard resources for personal pleasure rather than invest them in the needs of others. Furthermore, we tend to equate generosity strictly with money, yet biblical generosity encompasses our time, knowledge, wisdom, influence, unique talents, practical service, and hospitality. We must overcome fear and practice open-handed giving, especially as followers of Christ. Scripture reminds us that whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully (2 Corinthians 9:6). True spiritual abundance is closely tied to our readiness to bless others, for God enriches us so that we may be generous in every way (2 Corinthians 9:10–11). Crucially, God never demands what we do not possess; He looks upon the attitude of our heart, desiring a cheerful giver who gives willingly without reluctance or compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:7). If generosity feels difficult for us, we should actively ask the Lord to cultivate this grace within our souls (1 Corinthians 14:12). Greed and clinging to worldly wealth are spiritual traps, as Jesus cautioned when He warned how hard it is for those attached to riches to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:23–24).
