Devotional Acts 27: Paul’s Shipwreck and God’s Promise

Today’s devotional is found in the book of Acts, chapter 27, and this is what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul and other prisoners are taken from prison in Caesarea to be transferred to Rome to await their trials before Caesar. However, during the journey, they had to make stops in several places to bypass the storms. Even so, the weather worsened and a severe storm threatened them. Paul advised the centurion that they should stay for a while in Fair Havens, because continuing the journey under these conditions would be harmful to their lives and the ship. However, the centurion ignored him and preferred to follow the advice of the pilot and the owner of the ship. Because of this, they had a very difficult trip full of tribulations. Everyone was terrified of what would happen if they did not find land to anchor the ship. They ended up exposed to the storm for 14 days at sea. But an angel of God came to Paul and told him not to be afraid, for his life and the lives of his companions were safe because they were in God’s hands. Paul passed this message on to the others and managed to calm them down. Later, as they approached land, the ship began to break apart. Therefore, the soldiers considered killing the prisoners for fear that they would take advantage of the situation to escape. Finally, the centurion, not wanting to put Paul’s life at risk, prevented this plan and permitted the following: all who could swim should swim to shore, and the rest should use pieces of the ship to reach land.

Observations

These were my observations:

1. God’s plan is fulfilled. Even though the journey was very turbulent and full of tribulations, an angel of God came to Paul and promised him that his life and the lives of the others were safe until they reached their destination, Rome, since Paul had his hearing before Caesar (Acts 27:23–24 NIV). Paul, trusting in God, passed on the message and assured them that nothing would happen to them, which calmed them down. Normally, in turbulent situations like this, we will not always receive a vision or an angel of God assuring us that everything will turn out fine. However, we must always take heart, even when things do not go as we want. For Jesus guaranteed that we would have tribulations, but also assured and demonstrated that He has overcome the world (John 16:33 NIV). Therefore, everything will turn out well in the end.
2. We must always follow God’s Will to avoid unnecessary harm. During the trip, there was a moment when the ship stopped at Fair Havens, and Paul warned the centurion to stay there to avoid damage to their lives and the ship (Acts 27:10 NIV). But the centurion did not listen to him and decided to follow the direction of the pilot and the shipowner (Acts 27:11 NIV). And, just as Paul had warned, they suffered many afflictions, risking their lives, and the ship ended up broken to pieces (Acts 27:21–22, 39–41 NIV). This is a warning that we must be very careful when we do not listen to God’s voice and do not do His Will. Because when we do not listen to God, things will turn out very badly for us (Jeremiah 7:23–24 NIV).
