Devotional Romans 8: Life in the Spirit and More Than Conquerors

Today’s devotional is found in the book of Romans, chapter 8, and this is what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul explains to the Romans three important points that we must consider as Christians: life through the Holy Spirit, the future glory, and that we are more than conquerors.

Observations

These were my observations:

1. Life through the Holy Spirit. When we decide to surrender our lives to God and place our hopes in Jesus Christ, we must put away our sinful lives (Ephesians 4:22, 24). For when we repent of our sins and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). This means that our attitudes must change because our hearts have not yet blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. That is to say, our hearts are still sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). And for us to be true Christians, our conduct must change. For a tree is recognized by its fruit. That is, a good tree bears good fruit and a bad tree bears bad fruit: we will never see a good tree bearing bad fruit and vice versa (Matthew 7:17–18). So, we must let our lives enslaved by sinful desires die and begin satisfying the desires of the Spirit (Romans 8:5). For only when we stop satisfying the desires of the flesh do we begin to gain the strength of the Spirit to live a life of holiness (Romans 8:12–13). As long as we continue satisfying the desires of the flesh, we can never become true Christians who love Jesus Christ, observe, and keep His commandments (John 14:21).
2. The future glory. As Christians, we must also change our perspectives and start looking at ourselves as eternal beings who are temporarily living here on earth. For the eternity that awaits us is infinitely greater than this passing stay here in this world. That is, we should not seek the glory of men, which is worth nothing when compared to the glory of Jesus Christ and God. For the glory of men is fleeting, just like our current lives on earth. We cannot take any of the things we accumulate here to the coming kingdom. For earthly treasure will be taken from us when we die. Therefore, we should seek to store up our treasure in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:19–20). For it is an eternal treasure, kept where no one can take it from us. Because when Christ returns in His glory, we will rejoice with great joy for the life we receive and the treasures we accumulated in paradise, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus.
3. More than conquerors. This is the attitude with which we must live our lives from now on. Because as Christians walking toward holiness, we become children of God and co-heirs of the Kingdom of God like Jesus Christ (Romans 8:16–17). That means God is on our side. So even though we go through difficult moments of great uncertainty and tribulations, we must always keep good courage. For the Person in whom we placed our faith conquered death and the world to offer us eternal life in God (John 16:33). Therefore, it matters little who the enemy is, because he cannot compete with God, who is omnipotent. When we have God’s protection, no one can be against us (Romans 8:31). For what is ours is already guaranteed and no one can take it away from us. So, we must move forward with our heads held high in the face of all slander and persecutions. Because whoever has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior has already won the most valuable treasure of all time—eternal life (John 3:16).
