Devotional 1 Corinthians 16: The Collection and Christian Generosity

Today’s devotional is found in the book of 1 Corinthians, chapter 16, and this was what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul bids farewell to the church in Corinth in his letter, explaining how to set aside the collection for believers. He then shares his travel plans before returning to visit them. Finally, he concludes his letter with personal greetings.

Observations

These were my observations.

1. We must set aside and separate part of our income to support Christ’s church. Paul concludes his letter by reminding brothers and sisters in Christ that we should set aside part of our earnings to help fellow believers (1 Corinthians 16:1–3). This money can be used to assist those in material need and also to support the mission of the church. Furthermore, ministers and religious leaders are doing God’s will when they preach the gospel in congregations, missions, and ministries. This is a calling that God entrusted to them for our spiritual nourishment and growth (Numbers 18:21, 24), so that we may learn from the wisdom and understanding God has granted these servants. In other words, their labor is worthy work just like any other vocation. Therefore, they deserve to be sustained and supported for the work they do, just like other workers (1 Timothy 5:18 and Hebrews 7:5). In fact, it is even more vital because they labor for the eternal well-being of our souls. What is saddening is that some people spare no expense to pay those who attend to their material needs, yet complain about giving tithes or offerings to support those who minister to their spiritual lives. This attitude is mistaken, for we should always give cheerfully when offering our tithes and gifts to God (2 Corinthians 9:7).
