Devotional 2 Corinthians 4: Treasure in Jars of Clay

Today’s devotional is found in the book of 2 Corinthians, chapter 4, and this was what happened.

Synopsis: In this chapter, Paul writes in his second letter to the church of Corinth, explaining how we as Christians are jars of clay carrying the precious treasure of God.

Observations

These were my observations.

1. We are jars of clay that hold the treasure of God. When Paul shared this with the believers in Corinth, he meant that the treasure we carry within our fragile earthly bodies is faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior (and consequently the Holy Spirit). As followers of Christ, we carry wherever we go the glorious reality that Jesus died to save us from our sins (John 3:16–18). This is the most valuable treasure anyone could ever possess, as it alone grants us access to eternal life with all the heavenly blessings it brings. Furthermore, it is the only treasure that neither life nor death can strip away from us; it endures with us through this life and into eternity (Matthew 6:19–21). This is also why we may be hard-pressed on every side yet not crushed, perplexed but not in despair, struck down but not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). We have the ultimate safe haven in God, who assures us that everything will ultimately be redeemed and secure (Psalm 46:1 and John 16:33). This anchors our lives in an eternal perspective rather than merely focusing on the immediate present and future. It also helps us recognize that human wisdom is foolishness in the sight of God and cannot compare to divine truth (1 Corinthians 3:18–19). Such a revelation transforms the way we live: we cease living to satisfy the fleeting desires of the flesh that the world idolizes, and instead live to walk in the Spirit, which naturally aligns with God’s holy will (Galatians 5:16–18). Therefore, we should rejoice and give thanks to God for entrusting us with this treasure. Moreover, we must guard it faithfully and share it with others so that they too may receive this incomparable gift (Mark 16:15).
